Galaxy S22 and S22 + might not use Samsung’s best 50MP camera sensor

We’re still a few months away from the launch of the Galaxy S22 series. However, some details regarding Samsung’s upcoming high-end smartphones have already been leaked. It was revealed a few weeks ago that the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 + will come with an improved main camera sensor with a resolution of 50MP. Now it has been revealed that this is not Samsung’s best ISOCELL 50MP sensor.

According to the prognosticator Ice universe (@UniversIce), the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 + will use Samsung’s recently launched ISOCELL GN5 camera sensor. It is a 1 / 1.57 inch sensor with a native resolution of 50 MP and a pixel size of 1 µm.

The ISOCELL GN5 can capture 12.5 MP images (2m pixels) in 4 in 1 pixel grouping mode and 100 MP images using a remosaic algorithm. It features Dual Pixel Pro autofocus for faster focusing, deep front isolation to reduce noise, Smart-ISO, Smart ISO Pro, multi-frame sampling, and staggered HDR. It can also capture 8K 30fps videos and 4K 120fps slow motion videos.

Samsung ISOCELL GN5 50MP Camera Sensor

While it improves on the 1 / 1.76-inch 12MP sensor used in the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21 +, it’s still not Samsung’s best 50MP sensor. We would have liked the South Korean company’s next high-end phones to use the ISOCELL GN1 (1 / 1.31 inch) or the ISOCELL GN2 (1 / 1.12 inch) as both sensors are larger than the ISOCELL GN5 and can capture better images thanks to larger native pixels.

Rumor has it that the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 + will feature a triple-camera setup on the back, consisting of a 50 MP wide-angle camera, 12 MP ultra-wide camera, and 10 telephoto lens.
