Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3 IP rating could be better than expected

A few weeks ago, we exclusively revealed that the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3 would have an official IP rating. However, we didn’t have the information on their exact IP rating, and many expected Samsung to make its next foldable phones splash resistant.

Max Weinbach has now revealed that the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3 are rated IPX8. If this information is true, Samsung’s next foldable smartphones could remain protected even when submerged in water (up to 1.5m for 30 minutes). This is similar to the IP rating of conventional Samsung flagship smartphones, such as the Galaxy S21 Ultra and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

Foldable smartphones won’t be dust-proof, however, which is understandable given the moving parts of the hinge. Samsung had developed a brush-like mechanism that removes dust particles from the hinge of its foldable smartphones, and the company may have improved it on the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3. However, it appears that this is not sufficient to obtain a dust protection rating.

It looks like Samsung has really improved the designs of its next series of foldable smartphones by making them thinner, more compact and more durable. In addition to having an IP rating, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3 also feature more durable UTG (Ultra Thin Glass) screen protection and a smaller gap between their two sides when they are bent.
