Samsung has strongly hinted that the successor to the Galaxy Z Fold2 will launch at the OEM’s major Unpacked event on August 11, 2021. Then again, the company could find itself a little late for this party if major leaks occur. specifications of 2 different and often highly reliable prognosticators prove to be correct by this date.
One of them, posted on SlashLeaks and attributed to Ice Universe, contains details similar to other such reports in the past. They include indications on the dual screens of the Galaxy Z Fold3, where they are located and their dimensions. However, this list of specifications is much more detailed than previous versions and can thus give a better idea of the daily use of the device.
To that end, Ice Universe claims that the next foldable will weigh 271 grams (g) in total. That would make it much heavier than even the largest and most extensive candybar-style flagships, albeit a bit lighter than the Z Fold2.
The chassis of this foldable is apparently (as previous leaks did) IPX8 and, therefore, somewhat resistant to incidents such as taking it out in the rain or the Z Fold3 encountering dust or dirt. Fans can also expect to use up to 2 SIM cards with this probably very expensive 5G device, and can also benefit from eSIM support on top of that.
The Z Fold3 is also expected to support Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 – very slightly outdated and disappointing connectivity for a new device that’s probably just as expensive. There is also NFC, at least, as well as a Type C port of unspecified data transfer rate and, of course, for charging the “Z Fold3”.4400mAh” drums.
This butterfly shaped power supply will support “fast charge“, which unfortunately only states Samsung’s 25W standard. Wireless charging is also mentioned here; however, anything above a standard 10-15W rate is not. Therefore, a Z Fold3 can spend a relatively long time connected to a wall or inductive pad on a daily basis.
As for the true main events of the high-tech phablet, Ice Universe’s new laundry list shows 7.6-inch primary and 6.2-inch secondary screens, made up of flexible and non-flexible AMOLED, respectively. The 2 panels are now specifically designed to have resolutions of 2208×1768 and 2260×832, with pixel densities of 374 and 387 ppi respectively. The visual content they can display can be supplemented with Dolby Atmos stereo sound.
Ice Universe’s new forward-looking spec-dump also supports the idea of under-display camera (UDC) technology in the Z Fold3. This also corroborates previous leaks which indicate a surprising resolution of 4MP in the sensor (f / 1.8 with 2.0μm pixels) integrated into the phablet’s main display. It could have been done to temper expectations about the quality of images and videos taken with a camera that is actually just there to be hidden.
As for the other shooters of the Z Fold3, they can at least be more powerful, with a 12MP triple mainnet capable of recording up to 8K. There will also be a 10MP sensor, coming out of a punch hole, on the screen of the secondary cover. Otherwise, a buyer would (still) have to get a Snapdragon 888 processor with their new premium foldable, paired with 12GB of RAM in their 256GB or 512GB internal storage SKUs.
Meanwhile, WinFuture’s Roland Quandt has also released his own Z Fold3 datasheet. It exactly matches the one related to Ice Universe, although Quandt has added other potentially crucial nuggets. It looks like Samsung has gone with UTG again to protect the Z Fold3’s main screen, giving it an extra layer of plastic coating this time around. Therefore, users may be advised to keep their fingernails (and a variety of other things) away from the foldable display for another year.
The 2 leakers also agree that the Z Fold3 will be available in the colors Phantom Green, Phantom Black or Phantom Silver. These options would be priced below the huge improvements over last year in several markets.
To finish, Ice universe also recently noted that the Z Fold3 will have a “improved“, and that Samsung has every intention of teaming up with Thom Browne for a special edition of the next flagship in 2021.
