As the clock clocked 0:00 in overtime, it was time for Golden Knights head coach Gerard Gallant to make tough decisions. According to the rules of the NHL, when a match approaches the shooting, the local team has the choice to shoot first or second.

Someone said we were 63% when we leave first when Fleury is at the net. So, I like 63 times better than other probabilities. The next game I could change it. But honestly, during my coaching career, I changed jobs. It does not matter to me. Some guys will want to go all the time, I think most teams do it, but I change it, I really do it. -Gallant

Gallant reiterated that he did not think it was really important, so he sort of relaxes his guts for the night.

If you score, there is (an advantage to start first). -Gallant

The Golden Knights have participated in four shots on goal this season and eleven in the history of the franchise. They went four times first and won only one of them. They left second of the other seven and won five.

Four of them took place at home, where Gallant has a choice. He chose to be first in three of four, winning a goal, while choosing to be second once, which he also lost.

(Must assume that the 63% of whom Gallant speaks are throughout Fleury's career, but who has the time to look at it?

I do not know exactly when this publication was published, but according to one study, going into first or second place during the shootout was not statistically significant in the result. At the time of the study. 50.5% of the teams ranked second have won, which is not advantageous.

Last night Gallant was joined by Brandon Pirri, William Karlsson, Alex Tuch, Jonathan Marchessault, Shea Theodore and Oscar Lindberg.

I'll let him explain the thought process on this one.

We have a good idea before the game. But to be honest with you, when a player looks really good in the game, you can change your mind or if someone does not look too good looking in the game or confident, then you can change your mind, but you have your list of shooters.

(Says with a smile) You go through different guys and feelings and sometimes it's an instinct. I'm sure people can look at the six people we chose last night and say why this guy did not leave or that guy did not leave, I will not tell you why.

Some players may not want to go, maybe they do not feel comfortable on penalties. (Shrug of the shoulders). That's part of it. -Gallant

He added that the results mattered and he was not afraid to change them.

Now, in the next game, maybe Cody Eakin is going to go, because Cody has been pretty good on breakways this year. We will change it. A few different players went last night, like Lindberg, I like the way he played lately and he had some very nice goals, so you give someone a chance. -Gallant

The last piece of the puzzle is to tell each shooter that he will leave. Gallant likes the last minute approach.

With me, I tell them just before they leave. I'll say right away to the first shooter and after that, it depends on who marks and who does not score. We do not list before the match. It happens quickly enough. -Gallant

Shootings are basically made to guess, and no matter what happens, when a team loses in a shootout, there will be a lot to criticize. It was the case last night. This will be the case the next time the Golden Knights drop a match in the skills competition that the NHL deems necessary because of the phobia of ties that unite North America.

I think I know who our six or seven best shooters are in a row. We will do our best. -Gallant

I can not argue with that.

Well, I guess you can … and probably.
