Game of Thrones finished an absolute huge the plot for the show in "The Long Night", the third of the last six episodes of the show. Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow, with just about everyone they know who is still alive, have finally faced their final showdown with the King of the night. Along with the Drogon and Rhaegal dragons, another missing ally joined the battle: Ghost, Jon's werewolf, who has not spent much time on screen in recent years.
We wonder what is the contract with Ghost for some time. His last match of season 6 was real when Melisandre raised Jon from the dead. It virtually disappeared after that, because of the efforts and cost of animating the werewolves, which were actually quite high. But we saw him back briefly in the second episode of Season 8, stating that the puppy was hanging around Winterfell with Jon. And finally, we saw him go into action at the beginning of the Battle of Winterfell.
Ghost engages in battle with the Dothraki Howlers of Daenerys and Jorah Mormont, who are leading the battle against the army of the dead. Slowly, however, we realize that the Dothraki are completely outclassed and that only a few horses and Jorah Mormont seem to survive the attack. Ghost is not one of the survivors we see fleeing to Winterfell – so what happened to the giant wolf?
It seems that there is no ghost version of Ghost in the fields around Winterfell, despite the idea that the giant wolf fell into battle. Although it never shows up again in episode 3, HBO gave a very quick clue that there was more Ghost coming, at least in the next episode of the series.
You can very briefly glimpse Ghost with the survivors of the Battle of Winterfell in the teaser of episode 4, aired at the end of The Long Night. Look closely to the right of the frame, behind Daenerys and Samwell Tarly, and you'll see Ghost with everyone in front of the Winterfell gates, as the survivors are apparently preparing to burn the many piled up bodies. outside the castle. A white fur flash and four legs is just about everything we can spot, however.
Not to see what Ghost did during the Battle of Winterfell was really a disappointment. In the first seasons of the series and in the romances "A song of ice and fire" by George RR Martin on which they base themselves, the werewolves and their relationship with the Stark children always seemed to be a very big deal, and a relationship that leads somewhere. The series, however, almost entirely wrote the distant wolves remaining. Summer, Bran's wolf, died protecting him in the cave of the three-eyed crow, and Rickon's wolf, Shaggy Dog, died off the screen before the Battle of the Bastards of Season 6. Ghost has almost disappeared from the show, with the wolf of Arya, Nymeria, who briefly appeared in season 7 to give Arya a moment of emotion before disappearing into the woods. In fact, according to some fan theories, Ghost and Nymeria both have a role to play in the battle against the king of the night and in the safeguarding of their respective Starks. One of the biggest disappointments with adapting the series novels is apparently that the distant wolves and their relationship with the Stark family seem to have been so low.
The role that Ghost might have, if any, is unclear. We know that Daenerys intends to head south to King's Landing with his last forces to take the iron throne, and it is assumed that Jon will be on the rescue to help. So maybe Ghost is coming down to rip some of the guys out of the Golden Company. Maybe Ghost will take a page from his sister and go free, now that the threat of the king of the night has been eliminated. This would certainly help to limit the effects budget for the latest episodes of the show.
If you're eager to see what's ahead, HBO has also released new photos of episode 4. They largely overlap what we see in the trailer, but if you want to look in the eyes of Cersei, Jon, etc. try to determine what their plans are, they might well do the business.
The Long Night, Episode 3 of Game of Thrones Season 8, aired Sunday and marked the longest episode of the series.
