Game of Thrones finally delivered Winterfell's bustling battle in "The Long Night". Many characters experienced their most heroic moments as the living battled with the dead, but it turned out that Winterfell's smallest hero had the biggest impact.
One of the best moments of "The Long Night" came when Lyanna Mormont, the fiery and minor ruler of Bear Island faced off against an undead giant. Lyanna may have joined the dead in this episode, but not before having shot down one of the most powerful warriors in the king's night army. We would expect nothing less from the most infamous badass of Westeros.
In the "Inside the Episode" follow-up segment, producer DB Weiss spoke about Lyanna's death and the reasons David and David Benioff and himself felt that it was necessary to give Lyanna such a heroic end . According to Weiss, Lyanna had made too much impression in her handful of scenes to not go out like a hero.
"Lyanna Mormont was supposed to be a character at a scene, then we met Bella Ramsey and realized that we would not do our job if we kept her as a character at a scene," Weiss said. "We knew that we could not give a great death to all those who died in this battle, because it would have been too much, but also, if it died, there would be no way not to take one. This is where the giant zombie enters. "
Weiss continued: "It only added an extra level of complexity at that time, I'm sure many people would have been nice not to have it there if we had demanded to reduce it." I think they also understood why we had to give one of the smallest strongest people in the series, a chance to go out and take one of the strongest and greatest things ever seen in the series. "
Do you think Lyanna has the end that she deserves? Or should she have lived long enough to crush Cersei Lannister under her little boot? Tell us what you think of this epic death scene in the comments below and find out who else has lived and who died during the Battle of Winterfell.
