YoYo Games is making GameMaker Studio 2 free for all developers looking to learn the ropes, which means creators will only have to pay when they want to share and publish their project.

The company is moving to a subscription model designed to provide more flexibility and affordability, while removing all restrictions on the free version of GameMaker Studio 2 to allow people to properly familiarize themselves with the engine.

These revamped purchasing options come in the form of three new membership levels: Free, Independent, and Business (shown below). The free membership does exactly what it says on the box, giving free access to GameMaker Studio 2, in-game resources, and learning resources.

To actually export and publish their game, however, creators will need to upgrade to Indie or Enterprise levels, with the former allowing publication on all non-console platforms, including desktop, web, and mobile, and the latter launching.
