Hunter Kahn, a mechanical engineering student at Cornell University, donated several Nintendo Switch consoles and games to the Minnesota Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis after cashing in nearly $ 30,000 in GameStop shares last Wednesday, he said. he told CNN.
Kahn, who lives in Stillwater, Minnesota, said he participated in buying GameStop shares to join the movement to prove “the big boys of Wall Street” wrong. But, he said, giving some of his new fortune to help the kids in the hospital felt better than waking up with monetary gain.
Kahn’s donations are valued at more than $ 2,000, the Minnesota Children’s Hospital said.
“We are very grateful for this generous donation which will help bring joy to the children of our hospitals, especially in these difficult times,” Jennifer Soderholm, president of the Children’s Minnesota Foundation, said in an email to CNN. “It’s inspiring to see young people in our community choosing to give back and give it back.
His gifts include: six Nintendo Switch Lites, two Nintendo Switch, several online store games and gift cards, as well as screen protectors and cases for the switches.
The hospital said patients were already using the donations.
“There is no group of people who deserve to receive a bunch of video games more than some kids who are going through a rough time,” Kahn told CNN.
Kahn said he encourages others who have benefited from the movement to continue to use their good fortune to move it forward.
“If we criticize these people on Wall Street and move the money from side to side, it wouldn’t make sense if we behave exactly like these people we were criticizing,” he said. .
He still keeps the original 50 shares he bought at $ 30 and said he plans to use the rest of his income to pay for his tuition.
