Chase Elliott did a bit of history at Dover International Speedway on Friday, setting the NASCAR Monster Mile qualifying record with an average speed of 165.960 mph.

Five drivers broke the five-year record set by Brad Keselowski (164.444 mph) in 2014. He was led by Elliott, the most popular NASCAR rider and winner of the last race of the NASCAR Monster Energy Series in October.

"I was afraid it was not good enough," Elliott said. "We will try to take advantage of this good pit box Sunday."

This is Elliott's first victory at Dover and his sixth pole of the NASCAR Cup Series.

While the opening tests were conducted in cloudy conditions, qualifying was held under sunny skies. Speeds have dropped compared to the first test session, where 23 drivers exceeded the previous qualifying record set by Brad Keselowski (164.444 mph) in 2014.

"Generally, when the sun comes up and other cars fall asleep, the track will lose traction," Elliott said. "That's part of it. Fortunately, we were able to do a good trick. "

On Saturday, two more practice sessions at 9:05 am and noon, with the green flag "Gander RV 200" for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup series race scheduled for Sunday at 2:00 pm.
