Battery
The Enduro is equipped with Garmin’s Power Glass solar charging lens, which allows the power of the sun to charge the watch as you move. Garmin has removed the built-in mapping features native to the Fenix 6 Pro in order to deliver that extended battery life, but there is still an element of breadcrumbs.
Obviously, in the event of a lockdown, it has been difficult to test the watch’s battery life, with current coronavirus restrictions limiting runs to once a day and close to home. When speaking to Garmin ambassador and ultrarunner Tom Evans about Enduro, he praised the drums, saying, “ For me, training is more than just training. running – it’s nutrition, it’s stress, it’s sleep, it’s handling all of these things and what the Garmin watches are monitoring all of that. With the 945, I charge it once, maybe twice a week, so it’s one or two nights a week that I’m not monitoring my sleep or my step data; with Enduro it lasts 80 hours in GPS mode or about 80 days of normal use. “People have gotten used to charging their phones once a day and their watches twice a week and it’s completely different – Enduro shows what is possible. It’s still a normal watch, it’s still the same size as a normal watch, but it has these features which means you can have this 360 degree tracking all the time which will improve my performance as a professional athlete, but also boost the general well-being of those who use it, whether for running or not.
That said, the watch is still remarkably light and not much larger than the other solar powered watches in the Garmin collection. Available with and without a titanium bezel, the watch features Garmin’s new UltraFit nylon strap, which is light and comfortable against the skin. Runners also have the option of switching to a silicone or leather strap if they wish.
New training and recovery tools
Along with Enduro, Garmin has launched a number of new training and recovery tools to help runners on an ultra adventure. Besides the traditional smartwatch features, with the Enduro, Garmin added:
- A VO2 max trail run: Runners who regularly walk the trails will notice that their VO2 max is different under the most difficult running conditions. The new VO2 max trail run option automatically adjusts based on performance, environment, heat and altitude acclimatization.
- ClimbPro Trail Improvements: Taken from Garmin cycling computers, this gives runners real-time information on current and upcoming climbs, including grade, distance, and elevation gain. Runners will be able to see how far they are in a climb, allowing them to adjust their pace and effort accordingly.
- Rest Timer: When running in the ‘ultrarun’ setting, runners will be able to start and stop a rest timer to record the time spent at each aid station.
- Mountain Biking: With the addition of mountain biking measurements as well as specialized grain and flow measurements, you will now get a trail difficulty rating.
- Recovery: After each workout, the watch gives runners recovery data, telling them how long to rest based on sleep and wellness data.
- Recommended Workouts: Like other Garmins, the Enduro offers daily race and ride suggestions based on current training load.
How’s it going?
For the size of the watch, we were impressed with how light it was on the wrist when moving. It’s definitely some serious gear and although most runners won’t need 80 hours of battery life, having to charge your watch less is always practical. That said, if you are looking for a watch that will follow you on your adventures, this is a watch worth investing in.
