NEW YORK – Wide receiver Gary Sanchez became the last New York Yankees player to test positive for coronavirus on Thursday after starting pitchers Jordan Montgomery and Gerrit Cole were sidelined by COVID-19 earlier in the week.
Manager Aaron Boone said the positive result for Sanchez came from a rapid test and the Yankees are awaiting the results of a PCR test.
After Monday’s game against Baltimore, Cole tested positive and was struck out of his scheduled departure the next day. Montgomery tested positive on Tuesday.
“I guess I’m kinda concerned about everything, but we just have to keep doing our best,” Boone said as the Yankees prepared for Seattle.
The three positive results came after the Yankees returned from six games against the Tampa Bay Rays and Miami Marlins in Florida, where cases of COVID-19 are on the rise.
“We were in Florida last week and that’s one of the places where the number of cases is going up and things like that,” Boone said. “So I’m sure it could have played a role, but it’s unclear who got what, when and how.”
At least 85% of New York’s players are vaccinated, leading to an easing of restrictions, but the Yankees have been hit hard again in recent times.
Since the All-Star break, star outfielder Aaron Judge, third baseman Gio Urshela and backup receiver Kyle Higashioka have tested positive with relievers Wandy Peralta and Jonathan Loaisiga.
Sanchez is hitting .216 with 17 homers and 39 RBIs in 84 games. He didn’t start on Wednesday but was part of New York’s 10-3 victory over Baltimore as a pinch hitter.
To replace Sanchez, Rob Brantly has been recalled from Triple-A Scranton / Wilkes Barre.
