According to a new study from the American Automobile Association, AAA, the use of superior gasoline in a vehicle that requires only regular gasoline has no benefit.

Prices at the fuel pump are rising while maintenance work in refineries is reducing supply.

Motorists on the West Coast, Rockies, Great Lakes and Central are the most affected, while motorists in the east of Mississippi are experiencing more moderate increases.

The average national price for gasoline rose 5 cents to 2.74 dollars a gallon this week and 8 cents more than in the same period last year, according to the data. of AAA. The rate is 28 cents higher than a month ago.

Refinery maintenance – both planned and unplanned – is largely to blame. The overall use of the refinery is 86%, compared to 93% a year ago.

California, Arizona and Alaska saw the largest increases week after week, by 18 cents, 15 cents and 14 cents, respectively. The cheapest gas states are largely concentrated in the depths of the South: Mississippi at $ 2.44 per gallon, Alabama and Arkansas at $ 2.44 per gallon, and Louisiana at $ 2.45 per gallon.

Outlook for gas prices

Western coast: Gasoline inventories in the region decreased from the previous week and are lower than the same period last year. Inventories could further decline, putting pressure on prices, depending on refinery maintenance time.

Rockies: The region took advantage of cheaper gasoline this winter, but starting in February, stocks declined. According to AAA, if stocks do not recover, prices could reach $ 3 per gallon.

Atlantic and Northeast: The region enjoys a surplus of one year on the other which could increase if the use of refineries continues to increase steadily.

Great Lakes and Central States: Inventories have steadily declined since mid-February in the region and have reached a new low for the year. The use of refineries is also declining, resulting in further erosion of inventories and rising prices.

South and Southeast: All states in the region, with the exception of New Mexico, saw prices rise this week, even as gas inventories rose over the previous week. If summer and spring driving increases, prices will also rise.
