California Governor Gavin Newsom has accused his critics of “arming” his son, who has drawn attention for not wearing a mask inside a summer camp.
Fox News reported earlier this week that Newsom took his son out of the camp after photos of him surfaced.
Addressing the backlash, Newsom said: “You want to come after me, come after me, but don’t come after the 9 and 10.”
Newsom claimed his son was at the camp for a day and took off his mask for a photo.

“They are attacking and arming my son,” he added. “I looked at the news from the network last night and they gun my son, who was sitting there with me crying last night. You want to come after me, after me. He didn’t do anything wrong.”
Californiacurrent guidelines for children between the ages of 2 and 11 state that they must wear masks for “youth camps, youth sports and other youth activities, including theatrical and musical performances and the orchestra. Updated CDC guidelines are coming for youth. “
California officials announced on July 9 that students and teachers returning to class this year will also have to wear masks, regardless of their immunization status.

“We’re going to start with a K requirement at 12 that the year begins with masks,” California Health and Human Services Secretary Mark Ghaly said at the time. “At the start of the new year, students should be able to go to school without worrying about whether they will feel different or stand out because they are vaccinated or not vaccinated – treat all children likewise will promote a calm and supportive school environment. “
