Gavin Newsom ‘incredibly proud’ of Biden amid Afghanistan debacle, steps up efforts to campaign with him

The governor of California in trouble. Gavin Newsom says he is “incredibly proud” of President Biden amid the backlash of his botched withdrawal from Afghanistan and stepped up campaign with him.

A local reporter asked Newsom on Monday whether the fallout from the Afghan withdrawal would “make it difficult” if Biden was “the right person” to campaign with ahead of the recall elections.

Newsom did not answer the question directly, instead sharing his pride in the president and doubling down on his campaign with him.

“I am incredibly proud of President Biden,” Newsom replied. “I am incredibly excited to have her support on [a] “No” and I can’t wait for him to come here. “

Biden perplexed for Newsom – as he and Vice President Harris have envisioned since last week – could prove politically toxic right now as the president grapples with the fallout from the fall of Afghanistan.

“Govt. [Newsom] is leading California through unprecedented crises – it is a key partner in fighting the pandemic and helping to better rebuild our economy, ā€¯Biden wrote on Twitter last week. “To keep him at work, registered voters should vote no in recall elections by 9/14 and move California forward.”

Prominent Democrats have rallied to support Newsom, a key ally of the Biden administration. Earlier today, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., Pledged to support efforts to defeat the recall by rallying support for the governor at the local level.

The encore race also saw a solid field of challengers, featuring celebrities such as former Olympian Caitlyn Jenner and conservative radio host Larry Elder running in the GOP.
