Gazelle ends its used device exchange program next year

Longtime home improvement firm Gazelle announced today that it is ending its popular trade-in program. This program had allowed people to trade in their old iPhones, iPads and Macs for cash.

Gazelle made the announcement in an email to customers today, saying the trade-in program will end from February 1, 2021. Customers have until January 31 to receive a quote and make an exchange, said Gazelle.

As of February 1, 2021, we will no longer be offering our exchange option on Gazelle. If you have a trade in progress at this time, your trade will continue as scheduled. You can also log into your account here to see the status of your current trades.

You will still be able to buy high quality used electronics for a fraction of the price in our online store. We’re excited to continue helping you save with incredible prices on used smart devices!

Instead of the swap program, Gazelle will focus on its ecoATM kiosks which pay “cash immediately for used smartphones and tablets”. To date, the company claims these kiosks have collected over 25 million devices, but the obvious caveat here is that they generally pay a lot less than full-fledged exchange programs.

Although Gazelle does not give details on why it is closing its takeover business, the space has become much more competitive in recent years. Perhaps most notably, Apple is making it easier than ever to trade in older iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches for instant credit on new device purchases.
