A GBI lab test revealed the presence of THC in a food sample from Sandtown Middle School, where 28 students were sent to local hospitals last week after eating treats for Valentine's Day.

The agency said Thursday that the Fulton County Criminal Police Laboratory had sent 46 food samples to be tested by the Fulton County School Police Department, which was investigating what had made the students sick.

"The test results of one of the items with the appearance of cereals revealed the presence of THC," said the GBI in a statement.

Due to a short winter break, Wednesday is the first day that Sandtown students will return to school since the incident.

An incident report from the Fulton School Police indicated that some of the sick students had eaten Rice Krispthere heart shaped candies and lollipops, among other snacks.

THC is a psychotrophic chemical found in marijuana.

The GBI stated that it was continuing its in-depth analysis of all elements, which it described as "priority".

Fulton County schools have announced a press conference at 1 pm. today to discuss the first lab results.

The district, in a statement released this morning, said the student code of conduct prohibited the possession of unauthorized intoxicants. The School District Police Service will determine if criminal charges will be laid.

"We will study this thoroughly and we will see it as much as possible," said Shannon Flounnory, Executive Director of the District Safety and Security Division.
