Earlier this week, Gboard widely rolled out its Material You redesign and Dynamic Color theme on Android 12. The Google Keyboard is also set to get more MY items and a settings redesign.

When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we can see different lines of code in this clue about possible future functionality. Keep in mind that Google may or may not offer these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be flawed. However, we will try to allow those that are about to be completed to show you what they will look like in case they are dispatched. With that in mind, read on.
Google has already updated the shape and layout of the keys for Material You, but Gboard will also get a circular “Popup on keypress” to replace the rectangular one today. A small adjustment sees the letter on the underlying keyboard layer remain visible instead of disappearing after typing.
This roundness also extends to the pill-shaped container that appears when you long press the ‘comma’ / emoji key to the left of the space bar. On the other side, by holding down the “period” key, you get an updated symbol panel.
Meanwhile, Gboard is seeing a pretty sizable preferences overhaul that matches the Android 12 Settings app with a large header at the top of each screen and additional emphasis on high-level toggles.
The best part of this redesign is the “Theme” page. While the layout – with its four sections – is unchanged, Gboard does a much better job of emphasizing the themes available. Cards feature rounded corners, while your selection is marked with a check mark and a perimeter outline. The “Automatic System” preview also does a better job of communicating what this theme does.
It’s unclear when these additional tweaks we enabled in Gboard 10.9 will be available.
