While the stability of Android 12 improves with each release, it is still in beta and some users received a reminder of this status last night via a multitude of “Foreground Service BG-Launch Restricted” system notifications generated by Gboard .
Some Android 12 Beta 3 users woke up this morning to several dozen system-level notifications titled Foreground Service BG-Launch Restricted. They came in rapid succession during the evening hours. The “restricted app” – com.google.android.inputmethod.latin – is Gboard and was attempting to update stickers or other similar expressive form of media.
Apps that target Android 12 (API level 31) – which was released with beta 3 this week – “can no longer start foreground services when running in the background, except in a few special cases”. The foreground action in the case of Gboard is probably a download.
If an application tries to start a foreground service while the application is running in the background and the foreground service does not satisfy any of the exceptional cases, the system will launch a
ForegroundServiceStartNotAllowedException.
It’s a bit annoying to clear all of those alerts, especially since you may have received other notifications overnight to make “Clear All” not quite the right solution. That said, there is no reason to worry about getting this prompt.
Many Android 12 Beta users have been affected by the issue of the latest Gboard app update that took place earlier this week. This is because some users are starting to see the Material You “Dynamic Color” theme which sees the keyboard conform to your set wallpaper. There are also other small visual adjustments to the layout.
