We saw a bit of everything Friday at the Riviera Country Club's Genesis Open. A day that started at 7 am local time and saw the start of the second round before the end of the first is obviously ready for anything, and that's what happened.
J.B. Holmes has made a pretty talent for taking the lead (more on this in a minute). Matt Kuchar apologized between his tricks. And Bryson DeChambeau briefly lost his head. But in the end, the cream has reached the top, and we ourselves have a delectable ranking with just over half of the second round to play.
First place – Justin Thomas, Adam Scott (-10): Thomas thrived in the afternoon round after shooting a 5 -66 early. His turn was his 13th hole – his fourth in the second round – when he hit a ball out of bounds but saved the bogey. Thomas then made four consecutive birdies and six more in the next seven holes, six holes to complete lap 2 when the match resumed at 10 am on Saturday.
Last place – Charl Schwartzel (+8): It was not a good day for Schwartzel, who made six bogeys and a double in just 14 holes on his second lap.
Other nominees – Jordan Spieth (-7), Jon Rahm (-5), Tony Finau (-5): Spieth is the main event here, and he participated twice in the first round which lasted two days. He said after finishing that he was still not where he wanted to go from tee to green, but that he ended up in the top 10 by putting blankets on a multitude of sins. I am fascinated to see what he will do over the next two days, given the bad mood of his last year.
What did Tiger Woods do? Big Cat hit the ball on Friday in Riviera, although his score did not reflect it. After 18 holes of play (including four three-rolled in the first round), there remains 1 sub and T55.
Who had a good day? Bryson DeChambeau has scored three different times for par, birdie and eagle. He was the best of the pack of No. 17 in his second round Friday night.
Who had a bad day? What about all those who had to play late in the afternoon? It appeared to be an Open Championship in Los Angeles with darkness, rain blowing sideways and a course playing much longer than on television. This will probably be the wrong side of the draw, even if the winner could still get out of this group.
Shot of the day: An ace on the PGA Tour, that's fine. An ace in Riviera, it's even better. But an asset to equal Jordan Spieth for the tournament head on Friday? For J. B. Holmes – the best.
What to watch the day 3: I am fascinated to see how much ahead of J.T. and Scott can race. When they started their day on Friday, there were seven in Spieth, and when they finished, there were three of them. Spieth will leave after finishing round 2 Saturday and will try to reduce it, but they did an awesome job in uncertain conditions throughout the day.
