The recently revealed Genshin Impact anniversary awards and contests sparked outrage and criticism within the gaming community.
Developer MiHoYo recently featured a suite of community birthdays competition which would award participants with varying prizes, ranging from free Blessing of the Welkin Moon passes (valued at $ 5 in-game), 100 Primogems (a single in-game roll, or Wish, costs 160 Primogems), or a new iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Many of these contests require participants to create and submit fan art, videos, photos, or cosplay. In addition, the rewards of several contests will be distributed through a raffle. Only 10% of the birthday card web event attendees will earn a Welkin Moon pass, for example, while the remaining 90% will receive 100,000 Mora (which can be earned with around five hours of original resin).
The responses to these competitions were multiple and largely negative. The Twitter and forum posts announcing them have been filled with critical responses, and the Genshin Impact subreddit is filled with lamenting posts. “how disconnected things are. ”
Much of the frustration seems to stem from MiHoYo’s continued reliance on fan creativity to fuel Genshin Impact’s festivities. “I hope you realize that not all of your players are artists, and even if they are, they don’t have the luxury of time to do free work for you and for what, just a few primogems?” reads a twitter to respond with over 18,000 likes. “Why do most of these things boil down to ‘Do free work for us and maybe you will gain something’? »Asks another Tweeter with 14,000 likes. “So basically we have to work hard to have a chance of winning 100 Primogems?” »Read a forum to respond with more upvotes than MiHoYo’s actual post. “I’d rather get a commission or a job than bother with this event,” said one Reddit post agrees.
This is not the first time that MiHoYo has asked artists from the Genshin Impact community to contribute to its anniversary marketing campaign. In August, MiHoYo invited users to design (and assign the commercial rights for) an anniversary advertisement to be coated on buses. However, this publicity for the bus did not spark the level of outrage seen today, suggesting that the timing of these new contests – i.e. with many players already disappointed with the anniversary – played a big role.
Many players have pointed to the overwhelming success of Genshin Impact as proof of the community’s support and enthusiasm, which some players say was not reciprocated on the anniversary. The new Raiden Shogun character banner set sales records, for example, and the game itself is now good spent $ 1 billion earned. Granted, Raiden Shogun benefited from the recent recharge crystal reset, not to mention the launch of both the first female archon and the central character of the game’s first all-new region, but the math at least checks out. Additionally, the argument seems to be that players who have already invested a lot of time and money in Genshin Impact are now invited to contribute more, and for an event that many were clearly hoping to be a relaxing reward buffet.
Anniversary art contests have become the heart of a new wave of backlash that has been brewing since Genshin Impact’s 2.1 update reveal stream promised upcoming login bonuses worth 10 free wishes. Many players were surprised to see that the big one-year anniversary connection simply matched the rewards given out for a previous holiday event.
It’s worth noting that the heretofore unpopular art contests are specifically labeled as “community” events and likely won’t replace in-game rewards assuming there are more to come. But as of this writing, these free wishes are the only major in-game reward explicitly tied to the birthday celebration. In other words, gifts like the five-star character Aloy and the four-star weapon the Luxurious Sea Lord were considered part of the normal updates. MiHoYo announced additional birthday rewards in an email sent to some players a few weeks ago, but he hasn’t confirmed anything else.
Genshin Impact’s first anniversary falls on Tuesday, September 28, and if MiHoYo has more giveaways to announce, it probably wouldn’t hurt to reveal them soon just to put out the fires. Of course, it’s not uncommon for gacha games to host birthday celebrations for several weeks, so it’s possible that the party won’t really start until Update 2.2 arrives in mid-October. . If nothing else, some sort of revelation feed, or just an olive branch from a blog post, wouldn’t hurt.
