The Game Awards are like nerd Christmas, and Geoff Keighley is Santa. He’s also the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy, and he’s replacing your dad, and the voice in your head too. It’s everywhere these days, after all: Summer Game Fest, Gamescom, this THQ Nordic livestream, Death stranding, and apparently The haunted mansion of the Muppets. Pretty busy guy.
But of course, he hosts the Game Awards, since it’s his baby: the awards show that usually brings several game announcements, exclusives, and premieres to our screens every December.
Last year’s event was broadcast virtually, with no in-person audiences, but this year’s awards will go to the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
For the Game Awards 2020, the big winner of the night was The Last of Us II, which won Game of the Year along with six other awards. The PlayStation also took home big prizes, with Sony Interactive Entertainment taking home nine publisher awards. The presenters included Reggie Fils-Aimé, Troy Baker, Keanu Reeves, Tom Holland, Gal Gadot and Nintendo Life favorite, Brie Larson, as well as the new pal and colleague of Keighley, the Swedish chef. Performances by Eddie Vedder, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the video game group OFK were also presented.
Over the past few years, the Game Awards have come under fire for announcing many of their awards and winners either in the pre-show or as a quick list all at once, as well as for awarding games that have been criticized for violations of workers’ rights.
The Game Awards 2020 saw 83 million streams, peaking at 8.3 million simultaneous viewers.
