George Clooney thought he would never see his children again when he crashed his motorbike in Italy two years ago.

In his new interview with GQ, the 59-year-old recalls the heartbreaking moment he was thrown from his bike and hit the ground after hitting another vehicle.

In the moments immediately following the impact, Clooney said all he could think of were his children, twins Ella and Alexander, three, with his wife Amal.

“He literally turned right in front of me. I threw. I’m going head over heels. But I landed on my hands and my knees,

“ If you’ve done it 100 times, maybe once you’ve landed on your hands and knees, and whatever version you’ve landed, you toast. It knocked me off my shoes.

He continued, “When I hit the ground, my mouth – I thought all my teeth were broken. But it was windshield glass,

“… My children were like a year old, and it was mostly the thought that that was it and that I would never see them again”.

After the accident, Clooney decided to quit motorcycling for good.

During an appearance on ITV This Morning in 2019, the actor said, “ I was very lucky to pull myself away from that one. It officially got me off my bike after 40 years, which is unfortunate,

He added that Amal was against him on a motorcycle after his accident.

“It was one of those conversations, we were coming back from the hospital and she said, ‘That’s it,’ he recalls.

‘And I was kind of like, “Well, maybe I can still get away with this”, and then my boyfriend, who was also in the accident with me, Grant [Heslov] … said, “Yeah, I’m leaving.” I couldn’t do anything – I was tied up!

The actor won GQ’s Man Of The Year title and gives a rare glimpse into his family life in the interview.

The Ocean’s Eleven star said he was convinced he would never want to get married or have children, until he met his wife, Amal, 42, whom he married in 2014.

He told GQ: ‘For 36 years I was the guy that if a kid popped up and started crying I was like,’ Are you kidding me? “And now all of a sudden I’m the guy with the kid, you know?

“I thought to myself, ‘I’m never gonna get married. I’m not going to have kids,’ I’m going to work, I have good friends, my life is full, I’m fine.

“And I didn’t know how empty it was until I met Amal. And then everything changed. And I was like, “Oh, actually, it’s been a huge empty space” …

“I had never been in a situation where someone else’s life was infinitely more important to me than mine. And then nail on two other individuals, which are small and need to be fed …

George also reflected on his acting career and how he likes to be brutally honest with himself and others about the work he has done.

“The only way to be honest about things is to include yourself and your shortcomings in it.

“Like, when I say Batman & Robin is a terrible movie, I always say, ‘I was terrible in that’. Because I was.

“But also because then it allows you to say, ‘Having said that I aspired to it, I can also say that none of these other things worked either. You know?”

George said he moved behind the camera because he didn’t want his age to force him out of the movie industry he adores so much.

He said: “I love this company. And I also don’t want to be 60 and worry about what a casting director or a young producer or studio director thinks of me. I wanted to be involved.

“The staging is the painter. Playing, writing, you know, it’s the paintings.
