ATHENS – It has been a long and difficult season for Georgian football, and the Bulldogs did not get everything they were aiming for, or even hit their first team goal to win the SEC East division.

And yet, coach Kirby Smart’s team have continued to fight and are arguably playing their best football of the season entering the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl at noon Friday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

“These kids actually did more, okay? Smart said, explaining the rigors of a season that started with training sessions last June and included the mental ups and downs of four games moved, postponed or canceled amid a Covid-19 protocol structured that forced them to give up trips back home and friends to campus social circles.

โ€œThey did more during the pandemic because they had to work twice as hard to stay available,โ€ Smart said. โ€œThey had to train twice a week, that is, train for Missouri once, train again for Missouri, train for Vandy once, practice again for Vandy, practice longer.

Vanderbilt, of course, called off, so now undefeated Cincinnati enters the ring.

The Bearcats worked hard and did all they could to achieve their ultimate goals, a college football playoff appearance and a national title shot, and yet they were turned down.

“If you want to pretend you want an opportunity and you want a shot,” said Bearcats coach Luke Fickell, “it’s an opportunity and it’s a shot.”

The Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl indeed promises that two of the most committed teams in the playoffs will fight for a final victory.
