After Georgia’s 45-16 win over South Carolina, head coach Kirby Smart provided an update on quarterback D’Wan Mathis’s status.
Mathis did not travel with the team to South Carolina, a first this season. And according to a report by Jake Rowe of 247Sports, Mathis is expected to enter the transfer portal. When reached by DawgNation, Mathis’ father did not confirm the report.
Smart followed a similar path, although he praised Mathis.
“D’Wan and I have had several conversations,” said Smart. D’Wan was very communicative. He handled things very well. The thing going on with D’Wan and our team is really a team deal, so I’m not really going to talk about it. D’Wan handled everything with first class.
Mathis started Georgia’s first game of the season against Arkansas. He was also relieved during the game in Florida for injured Stetson Bennett. He completed 12 of his 30 attempted passes while throwing a three-interception touchdown. But after Daniels’ strong play, the writing seems to be on the wall for Mathis.
Daniels completed 10 of his 16 attempted passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday’s win. Despite the uneven victory, Daniels was the only Georgian quarterback to take snaps in the game.

In addition to Daniels, Stetson Bennett and Carson Beck made the trip to South Carolina.
After the game in Florida, Smart was asked to explain what Mathis could improve.
“The first thing to do would be to start with precision. He needs to improve that, ”Smart said. “Thing number two is attack management, in terms of play-call, communication, change of movement, instant count – a lot of things of that nature – that he’s improved on. He had the opportunity to go with both for three or four weeks and grew and improved.
Mathis was working as a fourth-string quarterback during warm-ups before the home game against Mississippi State.
Smart added on November 9 that Mathis had shown he wanted to keep working to improve.
“He’s committed to trying to improve to help the team,” said Smart. “He’s an extremely passionate competitor. You see him when he runs, right? He’s trying to convince the guys whether he can or not – that part is a great redemptive quality about him. But he has to grow in other areas and improve. “
Mathis signed with Georgia as a 4-star quarterback in the 2019 recruiting cycle. He wore a red shirt in his freshman year in Athens after needing emergency brain surgery in May 2019. Mathis got over that and started the first game of the season in Georgia.
Georgia are set to face Vanderbilt next Saturday. The Commodores lost 41-0 to Missouri this week.
