Georgia Defense Celebrates South Carolina ‘Redemption’ With Some Hedge Destruction

During the week, Georgia safety Lewis Cine made sure to make it clear that the Bulldogs were not looking for revenge on the South Carolina Gamecocks. The Bulldogs had lost 20-17 last year when the two teams met in Athens. After the win, South Carolina boosted football, so to speak, tearing up Georgia’s famous hurdles.

Cine used a different word to describe the goals of the Georgia team. And thanks in part to Cine’s 12 tackles, the mission was accomplished for Georgia.

“It was great. It was awesome. We got redemption, ”Cine said after the 45-16 victory.

Georgia senior linebackers Monty Rice and Jermaine Johnson got a little more than redemption as they also managed to grab a piece of the South Carolina hurdles after the game.

South Carolina finished with a total of 273 offensive yards, while the Gamecocks had just 83 rushing yards and 190 in the air. It wasn’t a perfect effort on the part of the Georgian defense, as the Bulldogs gave up back-to-back goals in the second quarter to reduce Georgia’s lead from 21-0 to 21-10. The South Carolina offense succeeded by targeting tight end Nick Muse, as he caught eight passes for 131 yards and a touchdown.

Asked about Doty after the game, Georgia coach Kirby Smart left in awe of what Doty and interim head coach Mike Bobo have done at times against the Bulldogs.

“I thought they had a good spark over there when they got the ball over us,” Smart said. “They did it with a first year quarterback and he had some good numbers because they made it really simple for him and took him out of the pocket and moved the pocket with him. They did a good job managing this.

But the Georgia defense just increased the pressure on South Carolina quarterback Luke Doty and the rookie struggled with that. The Bulldogs finished with 4.0 sacks in the game, with Johnson and Azeez Ojulari adding to their season tally. The Bulldogs also had 10 loss tackles against South Carolina, the most for Georgia in a single game this year.

The Georgia defense also forced Doty to an interception, as cornerback Tyson Campbell invented the first interception of his career as he landed a pass from Doty in the third quarter. The fact that the Gamecocks didn’t have their superior wide receiver than Shi Smith didn’t help matters.

Doty finished the game by completing 18 of his 22 attempts for 190 yards to go with the touchdown and interception.

“We knew what they were going to do,” Cine said. “The point was to stop them and make them one-dimensional in what they were doing. Yeah, we would have liked to have some comeback opportunities but we did what we were supposed to do.

Georgia was once again without Richard LeCounte and Jordan Davis, although the latter traveled with the team to South Carolina.

The Bulldogs will have a chance to beat another young quarterback next week, with the Bulldogs facing off against Vanderbilt and Ken Seals. The Commodores were shut out by Missouri on Saturday, losing 41-0.
