Tre Brown, 19, was arrested on January 14 after allegedly creating false returns at the Kroger store where he worked in Duluth, Ga., According to a press release from Gwinnett County Police. He was charged with felony theft and released on bail the same day, according to online prison records.
Brown is accused of creating more than 40 returns ranging from $ 75 to over $ 87,000 for non-existent items and of making refunds on multiple credit cards, police said. Detectives say he stole more than $ 980,000 in two weeks before employees at the grocery chain noticed the fraudulent transactions and contacted police, according to the press release.
Brown bought two vehicles with the money, but totaled one before his arrest, according to the police statement. He did not give details of the number or type of firearms that the police claim to have purchased.
A substantial portion of the money was returned after his arrest, but Gwinnett Police Corporal Collin Flynn said they were still calculating the exact amount.
CNN was unable to reach Brown for comment and it is not clear if he has a lawyer.
In a statement to CNN, Kroger says he cannot comment on the ongoing investigation.
