Georgian authorities are investigating the shooting death, implicating an officer, of a man who allegedly first pointed a gun at police who offered to take him away after seeing him walking along a piece of land- full.
The DeKalb County Police Department said it responded around 8 a.m. on Saturday “to calls about a suspicious man walking on I-20.” On his arrival at the scene, an agent approached the man “and offered to go to the nearest gas station, away from [harm’s] way, ”police said.

After visiting a gas station at 2701 Candler Road in Decatur, Georgia, the man “produced a gun,” police said. The officers “then discharged their firearm, fatally injuring the man,” according to the department. No officer was injured in the incident.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is now handling the investigation.
In a statement of its own, the agency identified the slain man as Christan Smith, 33, of Ellenwood.
“While in the parking lot, officers learned that Smith had an active arrest warrant,” GBI said. “During the process of Smith’s arrest, the police unloaded their guns and shot Smith. Smith then died of his injuries… There was a gun located near Smith’s body.”

Once GBI completes its investigation, it will be turned over to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
