Georgia RB rising star Brian Herrien plays "adult football"

ATHENS – There was rain and wind at Sanford Stadium on Saturday afternoon, but also thunder and lightning in the Georgia football field.

Senior Brian Herrien continued to show that he was more than just a ram, grabbing the ball off the court and showing how dangerous he could be in a clear space on a 13-yard touchdown.

"My dad always told me to run behind my shelves and not let anyone hit your legs, always keeping your feet moving," said Herrien. "I watch a lot of Adrian Peterson, Earl Campbell, Walter Payton – a lot of old-school backs running behind their leggings."

There is no doubt that Herrien did not just show a burst towards the goal line, he also toppled an NFL security veteran with a stiff arm on J.R. Reed en route to the touchdown.

Herrien led the team with a total of 75 yards and one touchdown, including two crucial conversions in the third and one in a row of eight.

If their title had been awarded to the spring match, Herrien would have been a strong candidate.

Return of the championship

The analogy of thunder and lightning is a cliché well used for the growing trend of football teams using multiple backs.

But few teams apply it as well as Georgia did recently with Sony Michel and Nick Chubb and D'Andre Swift and Elijah Holyfield last season.

Swift deserves Heisman's 2019 pre-season hype with his cutting-edge cutting and rotation capabilities and his home run speed.

But the teams do not win championships without having a back like Herrien who can pick up the tough yards and the soldier despite the bumps and bruises.

Douglasville, a 6-foot, 210-pounder, showed in the G-Day match that he was ready to make the most of his catch and reach.

"Whenever I have one, I look at it the same way," said Herrien. "It's my first and last, I'm doing what I can do."

Double

Georgia coach Kirby Smart was not thrilled when he was told of Herrien's impressive performance in the G-Day match.

But that's only because he knows what Herrian can do and seems to be waiting for that kind of high performance and play from No. 35.

"Brian is a good back and Brian has improved," Smart said. "He's been here for several springs (and) one of those springs that he won 20 or 30 times when Nick (Chubb) and Sony (Michel) came back to old age.

"So I saw a lot of Brian's work. He has good balloon caching skills, he has a good understanding of our attack and I thought he was handsome today. "

In 40 career games, Herrien has collected 174 runs for 923 yards with 7 touchdowns and 12 catches for 57 yards and one touchdown.

There is a good chance Herrien will double that total this season as Georgia will use it in tandem with Swift, James Cook and possibly Zamir White and rookie Kenny McIntosh.

It's potentially a 15-game season and Smart knows he needs Swift and Herrien to be there at the end of the championship.

Continuous growth

Meanwhile, Herrien said that he could continue to grow as a leader and player.

"Just know the defenses, read before the clash, who will fill the gaps," said Herrien. "If the securities are down and the linebacker pushed, the security must fill it."

The training competition will also continue as the fall recovers.

"Tyler Clark and I are going to every game. Every game I do in my composition, he does it, I look at him, he will wink at me, I will do it," said Herrien. "It was third and one (Saturday) and he caught me and tried to charge me behind the sticks, but I had already managed the first one.

"They (the defense) sometimes train us in the training and sometimes in the mixed game, but the offensive has won today."

Herrien won the spring football session.
