Georgian Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has said that while his family has supported President Donald Trump in this year’s election, he has embraced impartiality while working to ensure the integrity of the election in his state.
“Obviously Georgia had a very successful and smooth election,” Raffensperger wrote in an op-ed published in USA Today.
The Republican Secretary of State praised Georgia’s efficiency in administering its electoral processes and praised the state for reducing long wait times.
A record 1.3 million voters mailed their ballots and an additional 2.7 million voted in person. Raffensperger said that for the million voters who showed up in person to vote on election day, their average wait time was only three minutes.
“It should be something Georgians should celebrate, whether their favorite presidential candidate won or lost,” Raffensperger wrote. “For those wondering, mine lost – my family voted for him, donated to him and is now thrown under the bus by him.”
Since losing the election to now President-elect Joe Biden, Trump has criticized the entire electoral process.
Lawyers for his campaign have filed lawsuits in swing states, including Georgia, to challenge the results. Trump made baseless and unsubstantiated fraud allegations and personally attacked Raffensperger, calling him a “so-called Republican” and falsely claiming, without evidence, that there had been “tens of thousands of fraudulent votes and illegal “in Georgia, which is not true.
Trump’s campaign also demanded a recount in Georgia, even after election results showed President-elect Joe Biden won.
Although the General Service Administration formally authorizes the distribution of government resources to Biden’s transition team, Trump is still keen to allege fraud and cast doubt on the integrity of the election.
Raffensperger said he is working hard to make Georgians understand that the election is free and fair.
“When I took office, I made a commitment to conduct the elections in Georgia with integrity. After any election, half of the voters will be happy and the other half will be disappointed. But I wanted to make sure everyone felt confident in the process and confident in the outcome, ”Raffensperger wrote.
He said Republicans and Democrats must work to maintain that integrity.
“In times of uncertainty, when the integrity of our political system is most threatened, the integrity of our politicians is paramount,” he wrote.
