Georgia WR Arik Gilbert on the road to major success by Ed Orgeron

HOOVER, Ala. –Georgia added three key transfers in the 2021 offseason. The group’s highest rated, at least at 247Sports, is former LSU wide receiver Arik Gilbert.

He ranks # 3 in the 247Sports Transfer Portal rankings for the 2021 season and will play wide receiver in Classic City. His former head coach, Ed Orgeron, stepped onto the podium at SEC Media Days on Monday where he was asked about the player he recruited from Marietta High School. Orgeron responded with class and high expectations for Gilbert.

“We wish him the best,” said Orgeron. “He’s an exceptional young man. Mom is a great lady. I think he’s going to be an All-Pro, All-American tight end has a shot at being a first-round draft pick.”

Orgeron did not hesitate to want to keep Gilbert in a tiger uniform. He stated this on file before and after Gilbert entered the transfer portal. LSU wooed Gilbert to also stay in Baton Rouge throughout the spring.

It was ultimately Gilbert’s desire to pursue his college football career closer to home that prevailed. Something he and his mother pointed out when telling Dawgs247 about his transfer to UGA.

“Coming home I think it was a smart decision to come home. I wanted to be with and close to my family,” Gilbert said. “I missed the whole family and now my two grandmothers will be able to see me play in nobody too.

Measuring 6 feet 5,248 pounds, Gilbert was the nation’s fifth prospect and tight No. 1 in the 2020 class according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite. He raised his eyebrows when he picked LSU and caught 35 passes for 368 yards and a pair of freshman scores.

The question of whether or not he wanted to stay at LSU started before the end of the season. Gilbert stepped down with two games to play in the 2020 season and entered the transfer portal about a month after announcing the move. He first enlisted in Florida, but reversed that decision a little over a month later.

He has been in Athens since June 1 and said he was recruited by the UGA to play for the wide receiver. Gilbert’s expectations for the UGA offensive in 2021 are similar to those Orgeron has for him – high.

“We are on the verge of having guns all over the field,” Gilbert said. It’s going to be crazy with me and Darnell (Washington) on the field at the same time, I think we came out of high school as the two best guys in our position, it’s going to be exciting for our fans to watch.
