A 5-year-old Georgian boy with no underlying health issue died from COVID-19 last week, according to a report.

Wyatt Gibson, of the town of Calhoun, lost his life after a short battle with illness at a hospital across the border in Chattanooga, Tennessee, relatives told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“Somehow I know you’re still here, but I miss you so much!” the heartbroken father of the child, wrote Wes Gibson on Facebook. “I lost my best friend.

The father and his little sister also contracted the coronavirus, Wyatt’s godmother, Amanda Summey told the newspaper.

Wyatt’s death comes as COVID-19 cases have once again increased across the country. The peak is fueled by the more infectious Delta variant and slower vaccinations.

Vaccinations are not allowed for children under 12 years old. Deaths in the age group are extremely rare, however.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, of the estimated 600,000 deaths from COVID-19 in the United States, 335 were in people under the age of 18, according to the report.
