Georgian teenager accused of stealing nearly $ 1million from supermarket he worked

Duluth, Georgia –A teenager from suburban Atlanta has been arrested for defrauding a supermarket where he worked for nearly a million dollars over a two-week period. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Tre Brown, 19, was arrested Thursday by detectives in Gwinnett County for criminal theft.

He was released from jail on $ 11,200 bail.

Gwinnett County Police spokesman Corporal Collin Flynn said Brown stole more than $ 980,000 over two weeks in December and January by fabricating more than 40 returns of non-existent items.

The money from the returns, ranging in value from $ 75 to over $ 87,000, has been placed on credit cards, investigators said.

Police said Brown used the stolen money to buy two cars, clothes, guns and shoes. Before his arrest, the teenager allegedly totaled one of the cars, a Chevrolet Camaro, Flynn said.

The investigation began after employees at the Cincinnati-based Kroger company noticed the transactions.

Police said Brown stole the money while an employee responsible for reporting fraudulent transactions was on vacation.

A “large sum of money” was returned to Kroger after the arrest, but it was not clear on Thursday how much it had been recovered.
