Georgia’s Mark Webb raises eyebrows at Senior Bowl with a nifty interception

ATHENS – If there’s one Georgian football player who needs to make the most of his opportunity at the Senior Bowl, it’s Mark Webb.

On Wednesday, Webb did just that, impressing with a nifty interception on a tip pass from Jamie Newman.

Webb was 6ft 1 1/2 and 210 pounds, and NFL teams viewed him more as a safety than the Nickleback position, he played for Georgia, where he was at his best going down in race support.

Webb faced some of the best in the country at the Senior Bowl.

Pass coverage has not been Webb’s forte, and twice last season, including once in the fourth quarter of the 44-28 loss to Florida, Webb has given up on interceptions.

That made a game in Wednesday’s practice all the more important as it showed NFL teams why coach Kirby Smart trusted Webb so much.

Webb, a Philadelphia Top 100 player who started his UGA career as a wide receiver, ticks all the boxes as a leader and disciplined teammate.

There is no doubt that Webb is a popular player who has all the physical skills and football knowledge to be successful in the NFL.

Webb has shown he can make field tackles with 21 saves this season in the 8 games he has played, also finishing with one interception and 2 breakouts.

Smart indicated Webb would play in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, but he was ruled out with what appeared to be a foot or leg injury and did not play in the 24-21 win over Cincinnati.

The “American” and “National” teams will return to Hancock-Whitney Stadium on Thursday for their last padded practice of the week leading up to the 2:30 pm game on Saturday.

Senior bowl notes

Georgia center linebacker Monty Rice remains sidelined by the foot injury which slowed him down in the second half of the season. Rice, a Butkus Award finalist last season, showed NFL scouts that he improved pass coverage earlier this season, so the value of the Senior Bowl to him was meeting players.

Tight end Tre ‘McKitty continues to impress in practice, following a prediction made by Senior Bowl Executive Director Jim Nagy. Nagy, a former NFL scout with New England, Green Bay and Seattle, said McKitty would prove to be a better NFL player than a college player.

Some UGA voice fans on social media are still unfinished Jamie Newman leaving the show last August, but Newman remains loyal to the Bulldogs and has told how he watched his new friends on TV last fall.

“I would have Wake on my TV and Georgia on my laptop,” Newman said, per NFL.com. “I just used Saturday to fuel my fire.”
