Donald Trump is known to have little understanding of the covenants his eyes do not deliver. And this is the case in the world of the US president, who relies solely on transactions, only if they give his country a profit. With whom he has to do it, in a few days, for example, with the NATO partners at the Brussels summit, he then wants to say: to whom I have shown! If Trump has really reached the best for Americans is actually a minor issue. As long as enough of his followers are as little interested in the world as he is, he gets away with it.
Among the common interpretations of how Trump envisioned international relations, this also includes: Where many people come together to find a collective line, in his opinion, there can only be annoying compromises. The type of Trump agreement always knows only the individual adversary of the negotiations. That's why the G7 summit last month was just another annoying appearance for Trump in these rounds. He did not care to find as much in common as possible – the withdrawn signature of the poor final communiqué was only an afterthought of his attitude, which was also displayed there: do not belong to it. The show with the "talented" dictator of North Korea Kim Jong Un was more important for Trump
He is now expected in Brussels for the NATO summit and there is a big worry that the US president no longer sees any value in this alliance. Ostensibly Trump is right with his criticism of the partners. In fact, many NATO states attribute their own security too much to USA . This is particularly true for Germany, whose defense spending is expected to increase further in the medium term, but will not reach the agreed 2024 target in terms of gross domestic product. Or, as NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg says: "1.5% is not two percent". He also expects more things to happen.
But did Trump really understand that NATO is more than just a billing? That Member States that will probably not reach the two percent target quickly enough do not owe "huge sums" to headquarters or even to the United States? But they have also recognized themselves: we need to invest more in their own defense – the debate on the European kidnappers of collective security is finally almost as old as NATO itself. This pressure puts pressure on the partners. But the nucleus of the Alliance, the promise of military solidarity in case of emergency, has never been questioned.
"Far too expensive for the United States"
If Trump was as firm on this promise of commitment as it had been on both sides of the Atlantic for decades, criticism would be productive . But the president himself raises doubts about this cohesion, let's examine if 35,000 US soldiers are really needed in Germany – and place the military alliance in a series of hated trade deals with him: "Too much expensive for the United States ". Since he was able to secure so many times Stoltenberg that he is a supporter of NATO, it's hard to believe it.
For if this were the case, Trump should do everything to strengthen the alliance just before his meeting with the Russian President Vladimir Putin . Instead of focusing solely on the bill, he should now explain to Europeans and Americans how important this alliance is. Instead of destabilizing partners with macabre allusions, it should be their most pressing concern to bring them closer together than ever – where everything is so much separating these days. Instead of sending debt recovery letters to the failing payors in his eyes, he could make his lasting successes: everyone does more, together we stay strong. Making NATO a good news Trump could write on the cape.
It would be the best preparation for the summit with Putin in Helsinki a few days later. The Russian president would be the biggest winner if Trump's message was in Brussels: NATO is only a burden. Yes, even unevenly distributed contributions within the Alliance weaken their strength. But nothing makes them as vulnerable as the erosion of the US President's confidence. Since the Europeans must be very uncomfortable, if they think about it: Trump wants to talk to Putin and all alone – without witnesses or registers.
