Istanbul: Ten dead in a train accident in Turkey

At least ten people were killed in a train accident in northwestern Turkey. Seventy-three others were injured in the accident in Tekirdag province, said the official Anadolu news agency, citing the Ministry of Health.

Five cars derailed, Anadolu continued. 362 travelers and six companions were on board. The wounded were taken to the surrounding hospitals.

Turkish forces reported on Twitter that they had used military helicopters to recover the wounded. CNN Türk said the locals were among the other tractors transported to help with the recovery work.

An NTV journalist said that the runway bed had been washed away by heavy rains. In pictures, the exposed rails were visible. According to Anadolu, the governor of Mehmet Ceylan province said that the area around the accident was very muddy.

According to Anadolu, the train had started in Edirne province near the Bulgarian border and was heading towards Istanbul.
