The urban population is growing: more and more megacities

People are moving in cities around the world. This will create more megacities. In Asia and South America, the giant cities of more than ten million inhabitants have long been a part of everyday life – but Europe is catching up.

The number of cities with more than ten million inhabitants will increase. By 2030, there would be 43 large megacities in the world, said the Federal Office of Statistics, based on data from the United Nations (UN).

There are currently 33 cities of this size. The largest is the conurbation around the Japanese capital Tokyo with 37.5 million inhabitants. It is followed by New Delhi with a population of 28.5 million inhabitants and Shanghai with 25.6 million inhabitants. By 2030, New Delhi will rank number one with just under 39 million inhabitants

According to the Federal Office, six megacities are listed in Asia and six in Latin America – more than anywhere else – in 2030, London will be the fourth largest metropolis in Europe more than 10 million people in the megacity – in addition to Istanbul, Moscow and Paris.

The population in the world's cities as a whole will increase. According to the Federal Office, by 2030, about 5.2 billion people will live in cities of more than one billion today. The proportion of city dwellers should then represent 60% of the world population, currently 55%. There are currently 548 million cities in the world.
