The health insurance funds, according to the wishes of the Minister of Health Jens Spahn, will in the future, if necessary, pay the costs medicines for HIV prevention.
He wanted to make sure that people at increased risk of infection were receiving a legal request for medical consultation, examination and medication for prophylaxis, said Spahn at the "Deutsches Ärzteblatt" Friday. The so-called "pre-exposure prophylaxis" (PrEP) is an effective protection against HIV. The experience of other countries shows that infections could be reduced significantly.
Spahn said, Germany is one of the countries with the lowest new infections in Europe. The goal, however, is to further reduce the number of new infections. The German Aids-Hilfe welcomed the reimbursement of costs and called the regulation a "milestone in the prevention of HIV in Germany". Until now, users of this prevention have to bear the costs themselves. According to AIDS help, the drugs will cost between 50 and 70 euros, plus medical advice and accompanying exams.
A few days ago, the United Nations warned UNAIDS against the complacency of AIDS. Overall, according to UNAIDS 2017, about 1.8 million people have been infected with the IH virus worldwide. The risk of infection among homobaduals is 28 times higher than among heterobaduals. Other groups at risk are prostitutes, drug addicts and transgender women.
