US Vice President Mike Pence accused the North Korean leaders of exposing the population to unprecedented hardships and atrocities. The regime has been in power for over 70 years with torture, famine, public executions, murder, forced abortion and industrial-style forced labor, said Mr. Pence at a conference on religious freedom in Washington. It is estimated that 130,000 North Koreans are incarcerated for life in inconceivably brutal labor camps.
The persecution of Christians in North Korea is unprecedented in the world. The only possession of a Christian Bible is a capital crime. People who identify the regime as Christian would be regularly executed or sent to forced labor camps with their families.
Pence is deeply religious and conservative. The self-description of the evangelical extremist is now famous: "I am a Christian, conservative and republican – in that order."
After months of escalating conflict over the program of North Korean nuclear weapons, a process of relaxation has begun. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has declared nuclear disarmament at a summit with US President Donald Trump in June and has not conducted any missile and nuclear tests for months. Two inter-Korean summits also took place in April
North Korea remains the biggest threat to the national security of the United States, according to recent statements by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. In addition, the country continues to produce fissile nuclear materials, Pompeo said Wednesday during a hearing before the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee in Washington. When asked if North Korea was pushing ahead with its nuclear program, he did not want to respond. Nevertheless, Pompeo was optimistic that the talks between the two countries were going in the right direction. "I recognize however that there is still a long way to go."
Pence also told Washington that everyone hoped that relations between the two countries would improve and that the threat of the Iranian nuclear and nuclear program would disappear.
