It is not new that the little exercise is unhealthy. However, it is surprising that health problems are so problematic, as a new study suggests: Lack of physical fitness increases the risk of death far more than high blood pressure, smoking or diabetes.
Study with terrifying results
The study was conducted by the US Cleveland Clinic – and to a very large extent: 122,006 participants from different age groups were observed over a 13-year period.
The researchers looked closely at the cardiorespiratory fitness, that is, the functioning of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, during a treadmill test.
Based on the test results, all subjects were badigned to one of five groups.
The scale ranged from very unsportsmanlike to extremely sporty.
In subsequent years, the research team compared mortality rates for the respective groups.

The danger of death decreases when fitness is high
Those who are in good health live much longer, according to the results.
People who barely moved, however, died five times as likely during the study period.
With a poor physical condition, the death rate was still one and a half times higher.
Incidentally, age does not matter because, according to the authors, fitness has a positive effect on health at any age.
Most importantly, the life expectancy of the elderly or hypertensives increases with sufficient physical effort.
"Unsportsmanlike behavior should be considered a health factor as well as hypertension, diabetes or smoking, if it is not more serious," said the study leader, Dr. Wael Jaber, to "CNN".
Good physical fitness knows no boundaries
Another result of the study: there is no limit to healthy fitness. The more athletic you are, the longer you live.
Even fitness addicts do not seem to have a negative effect on the heart and circulation.
"The study shows that super sports still have a longer life expectancy," Jaber said.
Anyone wishing to increase their life expectancy should therefore practice the best sport on a daily basis – or at least move enough.
Depending on the current fitness level, one to two hours a day make sense.
