Criminal fire on "AIDAnova" a "possible cause"

Papenburg. Contrary to other information published in the media, it has not yet been determined whether the fire of the cruise ship "AIDAnova", that the shipyard Papenburg Meyer is currently finishing at Eemshaven, has been caused by arson. Police spokesman Anthony Hogeveen said Friday, at the request of our editorial, that it was "a possible cause".

Several media reported Thursday night that police had confirmed that the fire that occurred in two booths on Deck 14 Wednesday night was due to arson.

As Hogeveen stated in an interview with our editorial team, the investigation would continue aboard the new 337-meter-long cruise ship building for the AIDA Cruises shipping company in Rostock. "We expect to be able to say more during the week and on the duration of the investigation," Hogeveen said.

Meanwhile, work continues aboard the ship. At the beginning of next week, "AIDAnova" will carry out for the first time liquefied natural gas (LNG) tests over several days. The new building is the first cruise ship in the world to be powered entirely by greener LNG.

The transfer to the shipping company, scheduled for November 15, had been postponed last week due to the "current status of the vessel's expansion". Four first cruises were subsequently canceled by the shipping company. "AIDAnova" is now due to leave for his inaugural trip planned between Hamburg and the Canary Islands on 2 December.
