The Schaeffler Stock Market Mapping Trade Show wants to significantly reduce its UK business. The two plants in Plymouth and Llanelli are scheduled to close in the medium term, the third in Sheffield, where clutches for cars and tractors are mounted, but remain intact, MDax Corporation said Tuesday. Production from the affected sites is expected to be relocated to other plants in Germany, China, South Korea and the United States. The focus is on the production of warehouses for the industry, defense and aerospace.
As a reason, the company called the next Brexit. However, "Brexit is not the only determinant of our decision regarding the UK market," said European boss Jürgen Ziegler. "However, the decision has been accelerated by the fact that, in this context, we must prepare ourselves for different complex scenarios."
The group now wants to start discussions with representatives of local employees. In total, Schaeffler employs just over 1,000 people in the UK and employs 92,000 people worldwide. The implementation of the plans will take up to two years and will be implemented as part of its announced program "Action 4 plus an Excellence Program". The fact that only 15% of the goods produced by Schaeffler in the UK remain in the country, while the majority of them are exported to mainland Europe, was taken into account in the decision.

In addition to the three factories, Schaeffler also has two logistics centers in Hereford and Sutton Coldfield in the United Kingdom. These must be merged into the Hereford site. According to statements in the press release, Sutton Coldfield employees will be working in rented premises near the workplace in the future.
