Rosenheim – Kathrein announced Monday that nearly 250 jobs at the Rosenheim site would be phased out by the end of next year. IG Metall now wants to make every effort to ensure that job cuts are as low as possible or "socially acceptable".

About 250 jobs are in danger. Kathrein is forced to rationalize certain areas as part of its restructuring and strategic realignment. As a result, 250 jobs will be phased out by the end of 2019.

This step is inevitable. "The executive council is very sorry for the necessary measures, but they are inevitable given the challenges that Kathrein still faces, so it is all the more important for us to do as socially responsible job cuts as possible", said Anton Kathrein. But what does "socially acceptable" mean?

Which people from which areas are affected?

Jochen Hafner of IG Metall said, at the request of rosenheim24.de, that it was first necessary to specify in which sector of the company the people affected by the job cuts. According to Kathrein's press release Monday afternoon, the business unit "Products" would be particularly affected.

Jochen Hafner confirmed a regular exchange with the company. You meet at least once a week to talk about the situation. IG Metall "will make every effort" in these discussions and plans to minimize the effects of restructuring.

Three possible variants

"We are trying to develop a transfer company and we want to change the employees of the company by the qualification in order to preserve jobs," says Jochen Hafner. In addition, they will discuss with the staff of the volunteer program. The people concerned then have the opportunity to take early retirement or, in the case of an offer, to change jobs. In addition, they receive severance pay. The absolute urgent solution is to dismiss employees who pay severance pay.

Jochen Hafner, however, stressed that the main objective was to define the "product area so that Kathrein stays fit for the future".

Titles from the past

Kathrein had recently been in the headlines several times. In early November, an employee of Kathrein, who wanted to remain anonymous, explained how bad the company was. Following the announcement by the company on November 15 of the dismissal of 38 employees at the Rosenheim and Ulm sites prior to March 31, 2019, Kathrein announced the cancellation of its upcoming activities on Monday afternoon.
