The Munich roofing specialist is positioning itself again in China: with the help of a local partner, Webasto intends to produce electricity storage for electric utility vehicles – and become the largest supplier of batteries in the world.

The German car manufacturer Webasto is building a battery production plant for trucks and electric buses in China. The company announced that it has reached an agreement with the Chinese manufacturer of cells Wanxiang A123, which provides for long-term cooperation.

The first joint project was the development and production of a battery component for Chinese commercial vehicles, Webasto said in Stockdorf near Munich. "The construction of battery manufacturing in China is an important step in our goal of becoming one of the world's leading battery system partners," said Freddy Geeraerds, Webasto board member. .

The automaker is best known for its panoramic roofs and sunroofs, but is also developing with batteries and charging technology for electric vehicles. The batteries for European commercial vehicles are manufactured by Webasto in collaboration with the South Korean supplier Samsung SDI.

China, however, prohibits Koreans from supplying the vast sales market of the People's Republic. Webasto made more than one billion euros in China last year. The last annual business figure of the group is raised to 3.5 billion euros. Webasto employs approximately 13,000 people on more than 50 sites.
