The SPD and the Union are almost closed to migration agreements

The Bundestag coalition factions voted almost unanimously in favor of the UN-brokered migration pact. A motion approved by the SPD and the Union was adopted by a large majority at separate faction meetings on Tuesday afternoon.

In the motion, the coalition parties state that the migration pact does not provide for "enforceable rights and obligations" and "has no legal or regulatory effect". The pact should rather contribute to the organization, control and limitation of migration. At the same time, the rights of migrants should be protected. The federal government is expected to continue to ensure that the pact does not affect Germany's right to determine its own migration policy and that national sovereign rights are not transferred.
