The concept car in Los Angeles is already very close to production – but the production car, of course, continues to work miracles, for example.

Granted, it's a bit confusing: Audi's first electric car is not yet on the market – and the automaker is already showing what the third electric model should look like. Here is the brief explanation: In the spring of next year, the electric SUV e-tron will be presented to dealers. By 2019 too, e-tron Sportback would be a coup d'etat for SUVs. And now, Audi presents the third electric car on the market in 2021: the e-tron GT is – surprisingly – not an SUV, but an extremely sporty quad. The technical base comes from the sister company of VW, Porsche. The platform will be taken over by their Taycan electronic model, formerly known as Mission E.

It has long been known that Porsche and Audi are working on a common electric platform for large sports and luxury vehicles. Only the Premium Platform Electric (EPP) is not finished yet. That's why, like the Audi on the e-tron and e-tron Sportback, Porsche has put a kind of unique model on the wheels. And as it also wants to use the synergies of the VW group, Audi has also been allowed to develop a car on this platform.

Prerequisites: The Audi must appear independent. On both sides, you wanted to make sure that the cars are not alike. "We met and voted every two or three months," said Marc Lichte, chief designer at Audi. Every three years, he explains, you want to achieve a new level of design at Audi. With the GT, it was the moment. Such an Audi has not yet existed. In general, Lichte thinks there is nowhere comparable electric car, with the exception of the Taycan Porsche of course.

The GT e-tron is dominated by the gently sloping roofline, frameless doors and the extremely powerful metal muscle at the rear. The rear view could be understood as a kind of blend of Porsche Panamera and Audi A7. The light band at the back s' widens outward and dissolves into individual segments. The dimensions are similar to those of the A7: The e-tron GT measures 4.96 m long, 1.96 m wide and 1.38 m high. The body is made of carbon, aluminum and high-strength steel.

"It's a series piece," says Lichte proudly. The metal above the back of Radksten is evoked. When addressing the designer, it is quickly realized that the vehicle is exceptionally close to the series. In fact, the car might well be on the road, as is now the case in LA at the show – with the exception of a few things. The production car will certainly have some traces and the e-tron logo on the back will not shine red. And instead of the 22-inch model of the show car, a maximum of 21-inch rims is mounted on the production model. But they are marginal.

A little eco: Inside, designers give importance to vegans? Layed materials? like recycled fibers in seat covers.
A little noise: Inside, designers have focused on "vegan" materials, such as recycled fibers from Sitzbezgen.

The same applies to the interior of the four-seater model: here too, everything is designed to be close to production. The screen in the middle is known to current Audis – on the second screen (as in A6, A7 and A8) has been removed due to the Bauhhe. The standalone virtual tachometer display is also known as e-tron. What is new is the shape of the steering wheel, which is now flattened not only below, but also above and generally slightly angular. Camera mirrors such as the e-tron will not be available at the request of the customer. This is not the platform.

"In fact, the car is an electric R8 for four people," says Enzo Rothfuss, head of exterior design at Audi. Meanwhile, his boss Marc Lichte is particularly enthusiastic inside the "battery pack". The reason: the 90 kWh electrical storage system installed in the vehicle floor has recesses in the area of the furring chamber. So, the car could be made extremely flat, without the adults having their knees just below the chin. Even Licht with his 1.95 meters still has a little air above his head.

A touch of ko blows inside: "The interior is 100% vegan," says Lichte. The fabric of the seat covers is made of recycled fibers, that of the imitation leather dashboard is synthetic.

Why the e-tron GT firmiert under the Audi Sport subsidiary logo, displays performance data: 590 hp, boost from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.5 seconds. The maximum speed is Audi at 240 km / h. The car has permanent four-wheel drive: An electric motor sits on the front and rear axles. Four-wheel steering should make the vehicle both maneuverable and stable. The honeycomb structure on the grill is also an indication of the genes of Audi Sport.

Audi promises a range of 400 kilometers to the WLTP for the GT e-tron – of course only with a moderate use of the accelerator pedal. Thanks to the 800-volt charging system, the shot can be used to charge 80% of it 80% over a cable. In the garage you can install an induction hob that charges the Audi without contact. It should be fully charged again during the night.

The e-tron GT is being built at Bllinger Hafen in Neckarsulm, where the R8 is also being manufactured. Audi does not divert the price yet. However, a basic version of the car for less than 100,000 euros would be available. With the usual equipment, it is more likely a realistic price of about 150000 euros.
