Benedikt Doll, world champion in biathlon: Fourcade wants to do more

In addition to his sport, the biathlon world champion, Benedikt Doll, has a great pbadion: cooking. Before the season started Sunday, he quickly published a recipe book. This of course also concerns the sport.

At least after his Olympic bronze medals in pursuit and season, Benedikt Doll is not only a fan of German biathlon. In the new season of the World Cup, which begins Sunday with the relay in mixed singles (from 12 hours in the Liveticker t-online.de) in the Slovenian Pokljuka, he wants to continue this momentum. Before moving to the heat-up phase, however, he published a recipe book in early November, which is unusual for a professional biathlete.

t-online.de: Mr. Doll, you published this month "Dolls Schwarzwaldlust – Das sportliche Genießerkochbuch". How did it happen?

Benoît doll: I fantasize about it for a long time. My dad is a cook and I watch him cook since a young age, so I grew up with him. That's why I love to cook myself today. Good nutrition is especially important to me as an athlete. And with the book, I want to get others to take a closer look at what they're eating. It was only natural that my father had developed many recipes during his career, all of which were delicious and had to be written on paper.

If the new season of the Biathlon World Cup was a menu, what would it look like?

Phew, that's a good question (laughs). Definitely a fresh salad at the front, as it is pretty cool in season, so something lighter. Then some appetizers and a soup, because you can still use them as a base for a long season. The main course would then be the world championships to be held in March in Östersund. Expectations are high and you are under pressure. For example, I have to defend the sprint title. It's already a heavier dish: maybe a Rehragout with spaetzle and red cabbage. Deer, of course, because you have to walk fast.

An interesting compilation. Let's be more specific: What are your exact goals for this season?

My goals have not changed much compared to the pre-season: I would like to win a medal in a major event, the World Cup. And it has always worked well in recent years (gold 2017 World Cup, 2018 twice bronze at the Olympic Games, ed.). Unfortunately, the World Cup was a little different recently: with only four fourth places in the individual disciplines for the 2017/18 season. I really want to improve this and most importantly, bring a consistent shooting performance.

Another victory in World Cup would not it be due?

In fact, yes, since the last one goes back to February 2017. But it also depends a bit on what others do. Especially Martin Fourcade and Johannes Thingnes Bö. They were totally dominant last season. When Martin and Johannes deliver perfect races, it's hard to beat them. But: new season, new luck! The German team has decided to bother the other two this season.

In pre-season, they were in the mbad start in third place. Are you aiming for the little crystal ball there, so first place?

I have not set this goal because it is extremely difficult to plan. This can happen so much during a season … To be honest: I was a little surprised to see that I was so up there. The World Cup is much more important to me. I want to finish eighth two years ago and finally finish ninth in the top 6. But I have to be even more stable on the shooting range.

For something completely different. Biathlon is growing and growing. In Germany alone, millions of people watch the races on television. However, his colleagues Arnd Peiffer and Erik Lesser recently stated in an interview with Deutschlandfunk that only 15 to 20 top athletes could live biathlon. Why this?

German biathletes can certainly live here. Among others, because many – me too, incidentally – belong to the sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr. This is similar for Austrians or French. But in other countries, where there are no authorities that promote the sport, it is already tight. The funding of a season exclusively by sponsors actually only works in Scandinavia and Germany.

When did you get your first major sponsor?

It was at that moment that I went to the IBU Cup, a step below the World Cup. Since the age of 20 or 21 years old.

Is it possible to become a professional without the promotion of sport?

It depends a lot on the commitment of the parents, because the biathlon is very material and takes time, even at a young age. Once you reach the World Cup, you can make ends meet without financing. But as a junior athlete, it's already difficult to finance one's life without support. Because you have almost no sponsors – or at least not to the point of living.

Speaking of "can live on it": Do you think about the time after the career?

Of course. For me, it's already clear that I do not want to become a full-time coach. And soldier for life is also out of the question. At the moment, I am studying Industrial Engineering and hope to finish my bachelor degree next year. This summer, I finished my semester practice in an electronics company. It was very interesting and the subject attracts me. In short: I want to go back to the market economy. It takes a bit of time to get used to sitting at a desk for eight hours, but a television expert or something like that does not suit me.

Finally, in the kitchen. At the Olympic Games, after the two bronze medals at the German House, you cooked the traditional Korean dish Bibimbap. What would you like to teach the team after the gold of the World Championship in Östersund?

Certainly not Swedish, because we have been there for more than two weeks. That will be enough (laughs). Maybe just spaetzle cheese. With that, most of us can make friends in the team.
