According to Dell, the information sought by the attacker was names, email addresses and hashed pbadwords. Dell did not specify how the Dell.com account pbadwords were chopped. Pbadwords are hashed to protect them from attackers. Dell.com does not even know the pbadwords of the customers themselves. But not all hash methods are safe.

The attacker would not want any credit card information or other financial data, Dell said. According to the Reuters news agency, the company had initially not informed its customers of the reason for the resetting, which had already taken place on November 14th. Dell did not mean how many accounts were affected.
