Carsten Spohr has a problem. The current and projected growth is so important that German infrastructure is becoming a bottleneck. On the Frankfurt hub, the CEO of Lufthansa sees no possibility of further expansion, especially because the terminals are operating at the limit. "Future growth would be of lower quality, and our customers and we do not want it," says the manager opposite the Aero portal.

In Munich, the lack of a third track limits expansion. After all, sees Spohr in the Bavarian capital, but still has unused capacity at the terminals. And that is why he plans to develop it. The strategy is "in Munich to develop on larger planes". The Lufthansa chief has repeatedly announced his intention to transfer more Airbus A380 aircraft to Bavaria. The general rule was this: small planes to Frankfurt, the biggest in Munich.

Not at the same hub

And maybe Lufthansa will soon have more choices. They are currently negotiating with Airbus and Boeing for the ordering of additional long-haul aircraft, confirmed Spohr. "The Boeing 787 would be a possible alternative to the A350 order, we are looking at it very carefully." Both models are well suited for the thinnest routes from the larger hubs, but also for the smaller turnstiles. "We would not use the A350 and 787 side by side in the same hub, but in different places," Spohr told Aero.
