During a fire on a construction site, the attic of a house of industrial complex clbadified "ice factory" of the Köpenicker Strbade / Angle Adalbertstraße was destroyed Wednesday evening. A spokesman for the fire department said that a total of 800 square meters of the roof farm had been set on fire before the armed forces were able to control the fire around 8:30 pm. Eyewitnesses reported that the fire was still visible from afar.
According to the spokesman, more than 90 members of the force participated in the firefighting work, which lasted until late at night to smother the brooding nests. "Fortunately, we were able to stop the flames from spreading to neighborhood homes," said the fire department spokesman. As often with fires on construction sites, the working groups of the ice-making plant had to occupy gas cylinders. Four could have run as planned because of the heat of the gas, it was necessary to put the firefighters safe. Neither the emergency services nor the residents were injured.
A dormitory adjacent to the property had to be evacuated as a precaution. The Köpenicker Straße was also closed because of the mission: bus lines 165 and 265 were diverted between Heinrich-Heine-Straße and Bethaniendamm metro stations in the evening.
The real estate complex belongs to real estate developer Trockland, confirmed the spokesman of the company, the Tagesspiegel. The company is currently renovating the complex and wants to build a mixed use of residential and commercial buildings. Trockland is also negotiating with the Senate on a development at Historic Checkpoint Charlie. Not only are the projects controversial, but also the investor – for links with the family of a former Turkmen despot.
The police could not say anything about the causes of the evening fire. Although it could have been arson, an evening spokesperson did not want to speculate – it was "pure speculation," she said. At night, the firefighters handed the site to the police. On Thursday, fire investigators will examine the cause.
The mission also shows the importance of the voluntary fire department for fire protection in Berlin. The first firefighters at the ice-making plant came from the Friedrichshain Volunteer Fire Department, which was soon reinforced by the professional fire department. Volunteer volunteers Wehren Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, Urban, Schöneberg and Neukölln filled the gaps.
