Sunny, hot and dry – it's the conclusion of the autumn of this year. However, just before the beginning of the meteorological winter, the month of November shows its uncomfortable side. In some parts of Germany, black ice threatens.
After the record heat of autumn now threatens the black ice
Clearly too hot and too dry – this is the preliminary result of the German Meteorological Service (DWD) also for the autumn of 2018.
After a record spring and an exceptional summer, the peak values of fall between September and November were numerous, said a spokesman for DWD. The colder or wet sections remained rare and short.
This should however be very different Friday: after night rush and driving rain until Friday Friday, some areas of east and south of Germany are threatened by black ice. "Probably the situation until Saturday morning in East Bavaria, in Mount Erzgebirge and in the mountains of Zittau," said the spokesman for the DWD.
In East Saxony, one should also expect strong gusts to moderate in the mountains and on the lake. Although it is quite cool in the east and southeast and temperatures range from minus two to five degrees during the day, it is very mild in the west for the time of the year, up to at twelve degrees.
The whole of the autumn was also mild: at 10.4 degrees Celsius, the average temperature this autumn was 1.6 degrees higher than the value of the reference period valid at the international level. Some days it was still very hot, even hot.
Thus, the hottest autumn day in the country was on September 18, with 33.1 degrees in Pabstorf (Saxony), Magdeburg and Cologne-Wahn, where the previous record of the year 2013 had been exceeded. But until mid-October, peaks of up to 29 degrees were still possible in the summer, even during the first two weeks of November, temperatures of 20 degrees were reached. Dippoldiswalde-Reinberg reported the lowest value in Germany on November 28th at minus 10.3 degrees.
With an average of 440 hours of sunshine, the autumn of 2018 was also the second most important sunshine since the start of measurements at the regional scale in 1951. The "target value" of 311 hours was exceeded by 141%. In the southwest, the sun sometimes reached 520 hours in some places, while Schleswig-Holstein was still only 340 hours above the target value.
At the same time, the autumn was much too dry after a summer without rain. On average, at 95 liters per square meter, only 51% of the target value of 183 liters was reached. It was only in the years 1953, 1959 and 1908 that it was less pleasant in the fall. "However, if you look at summer and fall together, since the beginning of regular measurements in 1881, it has never been so dry for so long," said DWD spokesman Gerhard Lux.
